Overweight and Under-Educated

We seem to be facing a horrible epidemic with obesity and health education in our society. I don’t think there has ever been a time that I have left my home and did not see at least 1 person suffering from severe obesity. I don’t know what the percentage is, but it seems that a staggering amount of Americans are overweight and doing nothing about it. It’s not like I see these overweight people eating salads, tofu, vegetables and fruit or trying to walk and work out.

I understand that some overweight people are fine with being obese and don’t feel any less confident than they might if they were fit. I’d say that we should all be comfortable in our own skin and if being obese is comforting, then so be it. However, I have a hard time believing that the multitude of health risks and negative images and stigmas associated with obesity are comforting for most. When weighing the the benefits of being comfortable in obesity versus the benefits of being healthy, it’s up to the individual to make the call. However, with the rising health care costs and shortened life expectancy, I’d give the edge to a healthy lifestyle.

I think one of the biggest reasons we have so many overweight people in our society is a lack of education on healthy lifestyles and weight management. I remember when I was in school, physical education was a real class and work out. Kids failed if they couldn’t complete the 4 minute mile, do at least 5 pull-ups, and hold the Chinese Torture Drill position for at least 60 seconds, and so on and so forth. I don’t know about physical education these days, but based on what I hear from my younger family members, it’s more like a recess period than a focus on health and physical education. If we are going to bring forth the next generation with longer life expectancy and healthier lifestyles, we’ve got to educate them on balanced diets and eating habits as well as proper physical activities. We don’t all have to be vegan soccer superstars, but maybe lay off the milkshakes and chesseburgers every other night. Every once in a while, take the time to cook a healthy dinner, wake up earlier to make time for breakfast, carve out time 2 or 3 times a week to excercise, snack on veggies and fruits instead of cinnamon rolls and candy, and get energy from fruit smoothies instead of Rockstar and Redbull.

I, of course understand that there are some diseases that cause obesity and I am quite sympathetic to that, but that is not associated with the majority of obesity these days. Also, there is no question many people suffer from eating disorders like compulsive overeating. This is a devastating mental health issue which can be treated in any one of a plethora of treatment centers offering dual diagnosis treatment. And again, this is not a condition that makes up a large percentage of the obesity in our society.

Too many people have found comfort in laziness and then seek resolve in lipo or some other kind of augmentive surgery. Surgery is not the answer and outside of extreme circumstances, not even neccessary. People just need to be more dilligent about getting their health in order and educating themselves and each other. It’s not about vanity as beauty has always been and continues to be in the eye of the beholder. This is about education, health, and the prospect of living beyond 65.

In Bush We Distrust

What is going on with Bush and his Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales? This drama has been going back and forth for months with contradictory testimonies from Gonzales and the Chief of the FBI. This is out of hand. Really, the only one who can make the final call to start a federal indictment is Bush and he’s showing unwavering support for Gonzales, like his unwavering support for this war we’ve been losing for the past few years in Iraq.

How many crimes has Bush committed since his inauguration 7 years ago and why is he still in office? The government was ready to impeach Clinton because he cheated on his wife (not a foreign idea for most), but committed no crime against the people. Here we have Bush, who has provided us with a laundry list of lies as to why we need to go to war with Iraq, and continues to lie about it, despite thousand of American casualties. He is in full support of an Attorney General who lies. I won’t even get into Cheney and his “business”. These people are liars. Why isn’t there a Liars Anonymous or treatment program for pathological liars?

Thank God his term is over next year, but it makes me nervous to think about what more damage he may be able to cause until that time.

Is it Mental Illness or Just Mean?

All my life , the word narcissist has been thrown around as more of a punch-line and less of a problem. Many people have narcissistic personality traits, thinking and behaving as though they are too cute and somehow better because of it. We’ve all seen it from time to time. You know people who walk around with a sense of entitlement for no reason other than “good looks” which varies depending on who you ask. These kinds of things are almost considered normal and most people just ignore it and call these people stuck-up or full of themselves. We can generally say that because so few of us know what a person who is really full of themselves may be like.

I never thought I would say it, but I know such a person and I’m actually related to him. My father is the poster-boy for narcissism. His picture should be next to the definition in the dictionary. But he’s not what you might think he would be based on general knowledge and ideas of narcissism. While people with narcissistic personality traits may walk around with a visible sense of entitlement, my father shows in his behavior his elevated sense of entitlement. Far beyond looking at him and knowing he has a sense of self grandiose, you may have to know him to get the idea. You may even have to be in my position to understand this personality disorder. It would take hearing your father tell you that he’s not going to give you any advanced notice as to when he’s coming to town from Africa, but rather expect for you to drop everything whenever he calls and go see him - even though you’re working, married and caring for 2 puppies at home. It takes knowing that your father expects you to bow down and respect him to the ends of the earth when he won’t even call you on your birthday. It takes having his wife physically threaten you and then hearing him laugh with her when you express your concern to him. It takes all of those things to understand how disturbed my father is and how far gone from reality he is. I don’t know about the rest of you, but if I ever treated anyone like that (let alone my only child), I’d want to kill myself for being such a disgusting person and parent. It’s a shame to me that there aren’t any rehab programs for narcissists because I know a few people who could use one, namely my father and his wife.

Does he have a mental illness or is he just an @**hole? My therapist (yes, I’m seeing a therapist because of my father’s behavior) told me about the possibility of a narcissistic personality disorder and it seemed to make perfect sense. I don’t know if this is all about a personality disorder, or if a part of it is his being an jerk. I mean, his wife is the most vicious, nasty, evil human being I have ever encountered in my life, so maybe she’s rubbing off on him. Really, she burned cats alive when she was a kid growing up in Bakersfield, Ca. (the armpit of California) and now she’s a mean alcoholic old woman. Who knows, but I thought I put in a tidbit about this narcissistic personality disorder since it has seemingly made my life slightly unmanageable. Any thoughts on this? I’d love to hear them.

I think I have anxiety

If I went to my doctor and told him that I think I suffer from an anxiety disorder because I can’t focus and I’m always concerned about everything under the sun, would you take a bet that I’d walk out that day with a prescription for benzodiazepines? I bet I would. I’ve watched people do it and there was nothing wrong with them. On the other hand, I’ve seen people with legitimate anxiety or depression get massive amounts of benzos prescribed to them - along the lines of 13 a day, including XANAX, Ativan, and Clonazepam. I could be crazy myself, but it seems to me that anyone requiring that kind of medication at such high dosages shouldn’t be walking the street.

All this chatter about prescription drugs and those who become addicted through legitimate and illegitimate means is giving me anxiety. But I’m not going to the doctor’s office. I’ve seen the damage these drugs do and I’m not going to fall under that spell. I don’t even like taking Tylenol. Read More »
